BMW And Nissan Give UK Car Production Boost - The UK automotive industry has received a significant boost as both BMW and Nissan have committed to the country's future manufacturing activity. Nissan will invest nearly £200 million in producing its latest Qashqai model at the company's Sunderland facility, while BMW has promised to inject £500 million into its UK manufacturing base.

Japanese car giant Nissan revealed that the latest Qashqai model will be designed and built in the UK, safeguarding 6,000 jobs in the process. At an estimated cost of £192m, the latest Qashqai will go through various stages of production; designed at Nissan’s European Design Centre in Paddington, London, engineered at its European technical centre in Bedfordshire, and built in Sunderland.
Nissan's President and Chief Executive Offer Carlos Ghosn said: "The UK has been a cornerstone of Nissan manufacturing since 1986, with the Sunderland plant setting important benchmarks for quality and efficiency in Europe and around the world. It's the home of the Qashqai, one of Nissan's biggest product successes."

Meanwhile, BMW has promised to invest £500 million into its UK operation ensuring 5,000 jobs are protected. Over the next three years the money will go towards building the next generation Mini at BMW's Oxford facility. Engines manufactured at Hams Hall and stampings in Swindon will also receive a significant financial boost.

BMW Chairman Norbert Reithofer said: "We have started preparing our UK plants for production of the next-generation Mini, and this investment underlines that the UK will remain the heart of Mini production.”

Ghosn and Reithofer both visited Prime Minister David Cameron at Downing Street to reiterate their support for the UK manufacturing industry.
